Skill Laboratory

Skill Laboratory

The Skills Laboratory at KSMCH, Jehanabad, combines modern training infrastructure with integrated IT and audiovisual facilities to support practical, competency-based medical education. Dedicated practice areas provide a comfortable, organised, and student-friendly environment where students develop clinical skills under faculty guidance.

Following the educational principles outlined in NMC guidelines for skills laboratories, training emphasises demonstration, supervised practice, observation, and constructive feedback in a simulated clinical environment. Mannequins, task trainers, and simulation-based exercises help students practise essential skills before applying them in patient care.

Key Areas of Training

  • Basic Clinical Skills: Patient assessment, examination techniques, and monitoring of vital signs.
  • Procedural Skills: Injection techniques, venepuncture, intravenous access, suturing, and wound care.
  • Emergency Care: Basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and initial assessment of emergencies.
  • Communication Skills: Patient counselling, informed consent, teamwork, and professional interaction.
  • Infection Prevention: Hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and aseptic techniques.

Modern Infrastructure and Digital Learning

Integrated IT resources and AV systems support instructional videos, multimedia presentations, and step-by-step demonstrations. These tools complement hands-on practice, helping students understand procedures clearly and learn at a progressive pace.

NMC guidance identifies patient examination and simulation rooms, small-group demonstration areas, individual and group practice stations, and review or debriefing spaces as essential components of skills laboratory planning. It also includes appropriate trainers and mannequins, equipment storage, faculty and support staff facilities, and video recording and review to strengthen learning.

Supervised Practice and Feedback

Repeated practice, faculty observation, and structured debriefing help students refine techniques, recognise areas for improvement, and build confidence. Individual and group activities encourage teamwork, clinical reasoning, and responsible decision-making.

The Skills Laboratory bridges classroom learning and clinical practice, placing patient safety, respectful communication, and professional conduct at the centre of medical training.
